Raised in a first-generation American Jewish family in the heart of Detroit, Eugene’s childhood was filled with love, adventure and life lessons. Looking up to his parents as role models and friends for support, Gene’s upbringing molded him into the man that would become: a successful businessman, powerful philanthropist and loving husband, father and grandfather. His upbringing shaped his work ethic, his love for Detroit and strong affinity for family. Today, you can see Gene’s knowledge, passion and legacy imparted into future generations of the Applebaum family.
"It’s very simple… family was first, work was second and religion was third. So when it came to leaving a legacy and carrying on tradition from generation to generation, I started with my daughters."
"Growing up in Detroit, the most important lessons I learned from my parents were to be an honest and fair guy, get a good education and be a good Jew."
"My mother was a very strong force growing up, and I credit her for my success. She called me “The Great Eugene.” When I looked in the mirror, I saw “The Great Eugene” and it gave me great confidence."
